Build or buy a home theater?

Question

Would I be better off buying a Bose sound system or buying seperate speakers and reciever? I know Bose is great quality but I don't necisarily need the built in hard drive or DVD player that their systems offer, I just want maximum flexibility as far as inputs and outputs and best quality of course.

I concur Bose are over priced for what you get.  

I would build a system if you have the cash for it (buy seperate components).   This will give you what you want for your situation and allow you to upgrade.

Thank you!  I'm glad that other people know that bose is OVERRATED!!  Anyway, depending on how good of quality you want, I would say build your own.  I have a PS3 for my blu-ray player and haven't looked back since.  I just got an Onkyo 705 receiver and love it.  The Onkyo 605, 705, and 805 seem to be favorites among PS3/blu-ray owners.  As far as speakers, I would look at Klipsch or Polk Audio.

A full AV Receiver is your best bet for flexibility and to future-proof. (You cannot hook a BluRay player to many of the  Bose systems)

Stick with Yamaha, Dennon and Onkyo. The onkyo TXSR-505, 605, 705 receivers have been winning awards for the features and flexibility.

Get a PS3 for your BluRay player (cheaper than many stand-alone players)

Then take a favorite CD and audition speakers.  While you can get away with less-accurate speakers for movies, a CD you are familiar with will help you pick out speakers.

The equipment examples given in that setup are the absolute "low-end" of Best Buy and Circuit.  Even at this level, the sound quality trumps anything the Bose could ever offer.  You could, of course, insert more expensive gear and increase your sound quality even beyond that.
