Question:

Burn quicker in overcast?

Why is that you seem to burn more in overcast weather then when the sun is out? My theory is just because it's cooler outside so you really don't realize that you are burning... is that right? or is there more to it?

  1. Yes, there is more to it. Your theory makes a little bit of sense, but there is another factor to consider.

I was told ("but Ma, i dont need sunscreen, its all cloudy!!") that the clouds would reflect the UV rays back to the ground.

So you might think theres not much point in putting as much sunscreen as you normally would, only to open yourself to more damage...

The same thing happens in snowy places, all the white snow would reflect back to you, so if youre going to go explore the Artic, pack sunscreen! :)

  2. Ya, I think that's right. Clouds don't block the sun's radiation that burns skin, just blocks the warmth of other rays
