I just started using buttermilk in some of my cooking, but how can I tell if it goes bad? I don't like the taste so I don't want to taste it, I use it for onion rings and chicken fried steak any of my coatings.

  1. The sniff test usually works if you can remember what it's supposed to smell like fresh and it's not more than a few days after the pull date.

But how can you tell when blue cheese has gone bad?

  2. It's bad when it separates into thin liquid with chunks.

  3. The smell will be off.

  4. HA! Drinking buttermilk takes some courage, I think, if we haven't grown up with it! Buttermilk smells kinda like sour yogurt from the lactic acid. Bad buttermilk smells like sour milk from the acetic acid and like bacteria from a toilet. How about freezing portions of it to thaw out when you make food with it? Like making ice cubes with it and keeping them in a bag in the freezer? Then you know it hasn't gone bad and can use as much as you want without worrying about it.
