  1. Garmin Nuvi 200w

  2. Go for a Garmin nuvi 200 or 205, or the TomTom One 3rd Edition or One 130.  These units cost $150-200.

  3. We got my brother a Magellan RoadMate 1200.  Very nice.  It doesn't announce the name of the street that you are going to turn onto.  It announces the turn with a "BONG" sound.  $150.

For $300 you can get a Garmin Nuvi 260 or 280 that announces the upcoming turn by naming the street.  The Nuvi 200 doesn't.

It was worth the extra $150 for me.  The units that announce the upcoming street are called "Text to Speech".  I'm having fun with mine.  Many people who buy a GPS realize that they spend 95% of their time driving to places they've already been.  They never needed a GPS.

If you just want to try one out to see if you need one, a company called "Mio"  makes a $100 model that seems to be popular and will get you where you want to go.
