A friend is visiting Costa Rica and called my cell, I missed the call and tried to call back. The number is a number in Miami, that kinda confuses me. Could that be a calling card originated in Miami? Any help would be great.

  1. Most of the US flights to CR have a layover.  If flying from the eastern part of the US it's usually Miami or Houston.  Any chance your friend called you in between flights from a borrowed cell phone?  Or pay phone?  It's the only thing I can think of.  Maybe he/she had problems in Miami and ended up staying there rather than continuing in CR (expired passport or something).

As for a phone purchased in Miami and used in CR:

US cell phones don't work in CR - even the ones with international calling.  CR has their own network that isn't compatible with US cell phones (or most other global networks).  I was there only 8 weeks ago and researched the topic in depth.  My friends cell phone company guaranteed she'd be able to use it (even though everything I'd read said otherwise) and she couldn't.  It's a completely different type of network.

  3. If you got a Miami area code, I suspect your friend’s call was from a cable company (like Vonage or MagicJack) via computer, where the subscriber is assign a number [and area code] for life.

Nowadays many Costa Rica businesses (and homes for that matter) are using cable phones that are hooked up to their computers; a lot cheaper making long distant calls to the US, Canada and Europe.  Depending where the cable company’s hub is, that’s where the area code would be and/or in some, the subscriber can pick their area code. However, the subscriber usually  gets the cable phone register in the US, (US address) which many do and take the connecting hardware to Costa Rica, like what MagicJack offers.

On a recent trip to Costa Rica, I called all the time to the U.S via laptop and using the WiFi at the hotel.  The area code would show up as a 303 (Coronado) even if I was in Costa Rica.  One of my clients in Costa Rica uses cable, and the area code that comes up is 805,  (Pensacola) and another calls all the time from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico with an area code of 619 (San Diego).
