  1. DV port on the camcorder uses a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable to connect to the firewire port on your computer. USB will not work. The firewire port on your computer *might* be 4-pin. We can't see what you see. The firewire cable probably did not come in the box - you have to buy it separately. If your computer does not have a firewire port, they are cheap and east to add if you have an available PCI slot (desktop) or PCMCIA slot (laptop).

MovieMaker is part of Windows SP2 and will import the video ... and edit the video.

Go to jvc.com - in the support area - you can download the manual for your camcorder.

If you got the AV cable route, you need to get an analog/digital bridge. Pinnacle Dazzle for only USB or Canopus for firewire. Since you are transferring using the composite (analog) connections, video quality will not be very good (compared to transferring digitally with firewire.

Standard definition video uses about 13 gig of hard drive space per hour of imported video. An external drive (250 gig or larger) just for video editing projects is strongly recommended.

  2. Your jvc camcorder needs a firewire conection to download video.

Your PC most likely did not come with a firewire port so you will have to buy one and install it.

Your camcorder did not come with a firewire (ieee1394)(dv)cord because most PC's do not come with a firewire port.

The USB cord that came with your camera is only for downloading stills.

  3. you need to find out exactly what kind of camcorder you have. Analog or digital? Mini what? Mini-dv? digital 8? Analog 8? If you can't figure it out post the brand and model of your cam. What kind of cam determines how to transfer. Digital tape uses firewire card, analog 8 uses a analog to digital capture card.
