Question:

Can I become a Swedish citizen?

The current Swedish law says that if you were born to a Swedish mother on or after 1 July 1979 you are a Swedish citizen at birth. I was born before that date. Is there some way that I can still apply for Swedish citizenship through my mother?

  1. If you have proof that your mother was a citizen of Sweden at the time of your birth, check with the consular section at the nearest Swedish Embassy.  But a specific cut-off date such this usually indicates a change in the law with a specific validity date in the law.  In such a case, you definitely have no rights under the new law.  You have to find out if you fall under the old law, and what your status would be under the old law.
