Can i go pro at tennis. I started like at age 9 or ten. right now I am 13.

I entered one tournament and came second place. I dont have a coach but I do have a good ntrp of 4.5. I play tennis everyday for about 2 1/2 hours and practice with a variety of opponents. I was wondering if I can go pro because many start at 5 or younger. My friends say I am good and I can beat alot of people but I still have doubt.

  1. you can do whatever you want. Tons of athletes don't start their sport until 16 or 18 and then a few years later they are in the Olympics. I wouldn't worry about it yet. Its not very likely you will turn pro because the odds are against you, but if you stick with it you might have a shot! You aren't really disadvantaged because you started later, its really not that big of a deal. What is a big deal is how you survive puberty. Drink lots of milk and hope you have good genes.

  2. i was having the same thoughts as you, im still in my stage now where i dont know what will happen. you just have to have faith in yourself..believeing you can do it and be determind to do whatever you want. hours and hours of hitting and doing drills of tennis will get you no where if you dont have the desire and faith to do well. i hope this helps with your question, just take it one day at a time and before you know it, youre going to win more matches and have more confidence in yourself!!

  3. What kind of tournament did you enter?

Quite honestly, if it was a national tournament, I'd maybe start to think about going pro. I'd like to point out one thing though, tennis isn't like other sports, starting to play seriously at 16-18 is very detrimental. If your goal is to turn pro, and you have the game at 13, you really need to eat, sleep, and drink tennis. That means a minimum of 5 hrs of on court training and match play followed by at least 2 hrs of off court strength and stamina training. I want to remind you that for every pro that is in the top 10, there are hundreds, if not thousands of guys who haven't made it anywhere as pro's. Also, you're ntrp rating means nothing. Play a ton of tournaments, nationals, super nationals, and ITF junior tournaments. Those will give you a better gauge as to where you stand among the best. Quite honestly, if your friends haven't played all of those, don't listen to them, you NEED to play those to accurately gauge what you need to work on in your game to accomplish your dream to play pro. You definitely have your work cut out for you, I suggest going to an academy, I attended Bollettieri academy in Florida, you get the whole 9 yards, as well as competition from the best.

  4. yeah,go pro.

basically, read what everyone else said, that's pretty much it. goodluckk!

  5. You're only 13. That's much too soon to tell.

It doesn't matter when you started playing. What matters is what happens between now and when you hit 18.

Also, going pro in tennis is almost impossible. Pros are supposedly 7.0, but those level things don't mean anything. Not to put you down or anything, but you're chance of going pro is extremely low just by the nature of professional sports.

Keep playing tennis and enjoying it, and don't quit your day job!
