Can I obtain a French passport?

Question

Maternal grandmother, now deceased, was a French citizen. Other 3 grandparents were British.

My mother has always used a British passport.

I hold a British passport.

Can I (i) apply directly for a French passport or (ii) will my mother have to get a French passport first and then I can apply or (iii) it is impossible.

No, you can't. You are not a French national and you don't fulfil the 4 ways to acquire French nationality--- You must have either one of your parents a French national, you were born in France ( still one of the parents must be French ), you get it through naturalisation, you get it through declaration ( married a French national ). So I don't see how you can obtain a French passport.

I'm guessing it's impossible from just a grandmother connection. The French are very insular and make it difficult for immigrants to enter the country, to get jobs, etc. Trust me, I know, I was in a relationship there for five years...

but i think they may want to know why you want a French pp if you already have a UK one unless you want to live in France, maybe there are other benefits?

No. If you are born of French parents you are granted French nationality, but grandparents are too far a blood link for that. And that's a guess but if your mother wasn't French when you were born the blood right probably won't apply. The law states clearly 'born of French parent(s)'.

Here is a good clear explanation of how to ask for French nationality and when it is automatically granted. I know it is in French, but then you're supposed to speak the language (evil grin).
