Can I use Amex in Athens?

Question

I have to go to Athens in October for business and my work credit card is American Express.

When I went to Blois, France and Brussels not many places took Amex so I had to pay myself and go through hassle of claiming back.

What is it like in Athens for Amex?

Do lots of places take it or is it only big hotels and the like?

You probably won't be able to use it for small purchases.  Amex is not very popular in Europe, with most people using Visa or Mastercard credit cards.  You may well have to go through the hassle of claiming back.  If you company regularly sends people to Europe it might be worthwhile pointing out the Amex is not a reliable card for use there.

I don't know if it will be accepted everywhere. Can't you get a visa, mastercard or diners?

Amex is not very popular in Europe. Although it is slowly gaining popularity. In Europe, and especially Greece, Visa is much more widespread. You'll just have to look for the Amex logo in the shop window or at the cashier's desk before you make your purchase, but I see if you can get a Visa card sorted instead.
