i just moved in to this brand new 2 bedroom plus den apartment. i live on the bottom floor... there are 5 stories total. the den is where i'm setting up my office but i've noticed that the floor is uneven by 2.5 inches so it slops 2.5 inches within an 8 foot space. when i'm in there I feel completely off balance... any one have a suggestion? can this be fixed? I really can't move again!

  1. If this is a new place and there is already that much slope there may be a structural issue.  If I were you I would consider moving before the place collapses.

  2. Is this a brand new building, or a new remodel?

I had a place a few years ago, where they enclosed a porch and made a room out of it.The floor also sloped 2-3 inches over 8 ft. The only way it can be fixed is to cut "Tapers" from 2x4's and nail them to the floor, then put plywood on top.It is a big job, but I did it. Good Luck! 8/2

  3. Some settling is typical with a new build.  It has to do with the earth settling around the weight of the new structure.  You may notice minor cracking in the drywall or wood mouldings come out of joint a bit.  What you describe is not normal settling though.  There is a structural flaw somewhere or the foundation is bad.  This needs to be brought up to the landlord and builders ASAP.  This is really unsafe and could cause *big* issues in the future.  Whatever the fix it is not your cost so don't worry about that.
