Can an uneven flywheel cause chatter?

I think I found my problem and heat issue.

  1. It can, but it's usually a bad pressure plate. It has a large spring diaphram in it that can break or warp. Do not get a rebuilt; buy a new one. Do not tighten one side all at once, but tighten all bolts a little at a time to take it down evenly.


  2. Any one, or more, of the three, flywheel, clutch plate, or pressure plate can be the cause of chatter.  The flywheel is certainly the most expensive of the parts and it could be a waste to tear the car down, and replace just the flywheel.  If the flywheel was resurfaced correctly and is still within specifications it may be ok to reuse.  Hard spots or cracks would have been evident when it was reworked.  You should examine each component carefully before you decide to replace just one.
