i have been practicing jiu jitsu and we are going to spar tomorrow (ive already sparred before) the problem is, i think I either bruised or broke my big toe. Its kind of dark red, but yesterday when we sparred i was fine even with the toe. Is it wise to still grapple tomorrow? What can i do to my toe to prevent further injuries?

  1. ice it, tape it up solid and wear boots if ya can

  2. Tape it up and don't train for about a week or two. If you s***w up your big toe you will have problems walking for the rest of your life. I've broken both my big toes several times playing football and training. Not letting them heal fully before I trained again I messed one up and every once in a while pinch a nerve that makes it hard to walk without a limp.

Though I'll tell you, when it's not bothering me I can puncture full, sealed, soda cans with it. All those times it broke made it hard as a rock.  You wouldn't want a toekick from me, even a light one will sit you down, my left toe is almost just as strong.

Now, as much fun as it was to say that, I have problems every once in a while just walking. Is the trade worth it? No. So the best advice is to tape it up and treat it with care. What's a few weeks compared to 70 years?

  3. tape it

  4. Your big toe as someone has already mention has a nerve running down into it as well as a blood vessel and as long as neither of these are damaged or are impeded after the toe heals then you should be alright as long as it's a simple break and the toe heals straight.  Their in lies the problem sometimes as some breaks are not what they call a simple break and/or sometimes the toe does not heal straight and you can have circulation problems or tingling and loss of feeling in it and part of your foot.  It sounds like it is a simple break at this point since you have sparred on it but I would give it a few weeks to heal up so that you don't compound the problem.  If you have good health insurance I would have the doctor take a look at right aways to just to make sure so that you don't have to have it re-broken after it heals if problems develop.  One of my students recently broke her big toe and it was a very strange break in that the bone split length wise as well as broke transversely or across the width of it.  It required surgery and two pins so you just never know.

  5. Tape it to the toe next to it. It will give you a bit of support, but will probably still hurt if you drive off it or bend it.

You will be fine, just suck it up..it's just a toe.

  6. hit it really hard

  7. Go for it.
