I bought a baby leopard gecko today and about a hour later i noticed it was missing toes. At least i think so because there just stubs and on the whole toes there was skin that it didn't get off during a shed . i have a 15 day warranty on it should i return it? It seems that it has no problem climbing. Maybe its nails just came off?

  1. No Sweetie, and bless yer heart for all the "what if's."  Yer gecko lost it's toes to either being biten off by another, or partial sheds.  They will NOT grow back.  This does not make the animal a bad pet... it just makes it a bit handicapped, and in need of more love.

So, if you can love it, despite the fact that it's not perfect... well, that's a grand thing.  But, yes, you CAN take it back, if you feel you must.

As it's new owner, if you'd like to improve its life, you can be sure that never happens again by giving it a moisture hide:

Most likely the toes were lost due to a bad shed, and not enough humidity.  It's a common failing in owning these adorable things.  The shed skin acts like a tight ace bandage and cuts off blood flow to the toes.  They die, and drop off.  It can happen to tail tips, too.

So, if it's eating, and active, and has bright alert eyes and curiosity... the tail has reverses?  Maybe you might want to keep your special guy and give him a better life?

But the flip side is lethargic... and calm.  Indifferent.  IF he's not healthy otherwise?  Take him back.

I rehab these guys from shedding loss, to impaction, to attack by other lizards, and see them in every way.  I see a lil guy with only 2 1/2 legs learn over, and manage to grow and breed.

So, he's a baby, and it's up to you.  If you take him back?  That's okay, and was what, $25?   Now, it's been a bit since I bought a pet from a store, but I would be all "I want a 50% discount!"  The adage about the greasy wheel is for real!  You march in there, and ask for the Mgr.  Say "I'll keep the thing, but he ain't whole!  I want a price break!"

You'll get enough store credit to feed it for a while!

He can't help he lost his toes.  Is that okay with you?

Love him, and give him a good home, or exchange him.

I rehabbed two which have almost NO legs, and wouldn't trade the world for them.   They are MY babies...  And if I can help it?  They WILL live 20 yr. or more.

If you need a gecko with all his toes... take it back, and be more careful selecting your next one.

Good luck, whatever you decide, and I hope this has been helpful.

  2. my gecko is missing 2 toes but its healthy and fine just keep it

  3. I don't think they can regrow toes. Not whole toes, maybe just the first joint like people.

The warranty should allow you to go to their vet for free (if you got it from petco) so, you should take him in for a free visit (take a p**p sample since it's free) and ask the vet if anything is wrong.

Or take it back to the store, or just keep it.
