Can parakeets learn how to talk?

Shortly I will be getting my very first bird for a pet. I'm thinking of getting a parakeet. My best friend, Courtney, told me the place where she got her bird, I might buy one hand trained from the place. It's not going to be from Petco, or whatever else you can think of. I want one that is handtrained, and I know those can be expensive, but my friend got hers for 30$. To me that's a good deal because I know hand training a bird can take a couple months. But if I can't get one that is hand trained I found an excellent website that has EVERYTHING you need to know about birds. Well anyways; onto my actual question. (: On the website I found it gave you step by step instructions on how to teach your parakeet/budgie, whatever you want to call it; how to talk. I'm getting one of the small parakeets by the way. Is it possible to keep parakeets how to talk. The instructions were something like.... cover your birds cage with a blanket, every morning say the word for about a half an hour. They learn best with words that start with C/K & T.

Is it even possible to teach the tiny parakeets how to talk. And if so, about how long do you think it will take. (: Thank you.

  1. Yep, like others have said, let it be for like a week, dont put any mirrors. Its easy to hand train them just be patient. I used to have a bird named Pete he would say, Youre pretty cute, Im a good bird, Haha, Petey want drink. He was the best. Mr Lemonlime is my bird now he is such a clown. You should go on Youtube and check out the videos theyre amazing! Good Luck!

  2. If you want your budgie to talk, only have 1 in the cage and dont put any mirrors in the cage.

  3. if youn want it to talk only have one in the cage also start with pretty boy it takes ages but one day h**l just start like mine did

  4. It's possible for a parakeet to learn to talk. Many of them never do, but they all have the physical capability to. It's really all up to the individual bird, and your bond with them.

You can teach the bird anything you want. Some words will come easier, it just depends. The sooner you can start talking to the bird and playing with it, the sooner (in theory) it will start to talk.

Some birds pick up whistles and noises very easily, that can be a good starting point. Once the bird knows you like to hear the sounds repeated, you can start making it more complex (like saying words). Generally sticking with just one or 2 words at a time will help speed things along as well.

  5. of course! but buy only one if u want it to talk. maybe u can but its unlikely to happen. its because the other bird pays more attention communicating with the other bird.so if i were u i'd only pick one to train it to talk.

    owns 2 parakeets

  6. yep they can but its gonna b a lot of work, it better to get a really young parakeet tho. n u can teach them to go on ur hand, n walk on ur fingers like staris
