  1. biological mechanisms to maintain balance. an example would be your heart beating faster when you exercise, to deliver oxygen to your cells more quickly, your body sweating in the heat, because the water will evaporate and remove some of your body heat, shivering in the cold, because the shiver motion and muscle activity helps warm you, etc.

homeostasis is why you get addicted to drugs, and develop a tolerance to them, because your body adjusts its chemistry to compensate for the addition of substances: adding the drug pushes conditions one way, you body tries to bring conditions back to original. That is why sugar makes you hyper if you havent had any for a long time, but not otherwise.

  2. it's the tendency of a system to stay with in certain levels. in the biological sense your body maintains a constant temperature(or at least attempts too) by triggering certain events if the temperature gets too low(shivering to gain heat from muscle activity) or too high(sweating to cool the body via evaporation)

  3. Homeostasis just means "in a state of being the same"...it's balancing out your body does to run consistently.

If I have a bad wound, my blood pressure will drop from the opening.  My body senses the drop in pressure and constricts vessels and raises my heart rate to accommodate for the loss of pressure...that sort of thing.
