I'm 14 and I can't always bike fast so is it illegal to bike on the sidewalk? (It is a 4 lane street and pretty busy)

The place I'm trying to get to is only 3 miles away.

  1. NO U R NOT ALLOWED TO BIKE ON SIDEWALKS, IM 11

I BIKE ALOT BUT GOTTEN IN TROUBLE BUNCHES OF TIMES FOR GOING ON THE SIDEWALK.

  2. try to avoid such a busy road! look for an alternate route. as far as the legality of riding on sidewalks, as a rule bikes are considered vehicles, therefore not allowed on sidewalks, and subject follow the rules of the road. some localities allow bikes to ride on sidewalks in less congested areas, but not in downtown business districts. it is also less safe to ride on sidewalks, as drivers look for pedestrians, but not bicycles on sidewalks. like I said, find an alternate route, and ride safe!

  3. I think cities and states have different laws. You could call your local police station. BUT---My daughter is 12. I tell her that on a busy street to go on the sidewalk, just be aware and give pedestrians the right-of-way. I told her that a police officer would rather see her bicycling on the sidewalk, than have to respond to an accident scene. I've never talked to anyone about this though...But as her mother I feel better!

Also--don't bike on the sidewalk if there are two or more bicyclists. It becomes too much of a hazard to those walking.

  4. It is dangerous and usually illegal to bike on the sidewalk.  Still, I do it sometimes.  I just have to evaluate the risk and use my best judgement.  If there are lots of driveways to local businesses and intersections with smaller streets, as is usually the case, you are better off to stay in the right lane.  There is just too much turning traffic that won't be looking for you on the sidewalk.  Your best bet is to find an alternate route, even if it is longer.  It is much better to cross a busy street than to ride along it, and then maybe you can find a parallel street through a quiet neighborhood.  Get a map of your city and see if there are other ways to get where you want to go.
