  1. Ooh, this shows how different nationalities get mixed up when in a different country.  In UK a duvet is the padded inner and a duvet cover is the cover for it.  Could get very funny in a hotel if you wanted the bedding changed or something.  We used to call them Continental Quilts in the 70's when they become popular.  That term is old fashioned now and we call them duvets.  My sister in law in New Zealand tells me that New Zealanders always use a top sheet.  This is useful if your duvet cover is very ornate, but then you need extra pillows because you would not sleep on the ones matching the duvet cover.  In the days of sheets and blankets we all made our beds the same wherever we lived!

  2. They are comforter covers. They serve two purposes:

    1. Too quickly change the look and feel of your comforter

    2. To make it much easier to clean your comforter (You don't have to clean the comforter, you just wash the duvet cover usually)

  3. Duvet is the English word for continental quilt. In Australia they call a quilt a doona.

They are large comforter-type bedding that is quiltish and is filled with down, feathers, wool, cotton or polyester padding.

They need to be covered, or they will get dirty and are hard to wash. So there are large things like super-sized pillow slips or pillow cases, that go over the quilt and fasten with buttons or a long zip.

You use a duvet, doona or continential quilt instead of sheets and blankets. No need for sheets - you just pull off the cover and replace it with another... one to wash, one to use, like sheets. No need for blankets - you can buy duvets, doonas or quilts in various weights. The best is wool padding because it keeps its shape, doesn't shake down to one corner like feathers do, breathes, and is good for winter or summer. It is also fire retardant, so if the house burns down, you won't.

The best thing about duvets and their covers is that you can change the whole look of your room by just changing the cover!! Then, making the bed is a simple quick shake in the morning. Shake and spread with one quick flip. Some of the covers are reversible, so you can have blue on top one night, and striped on top the next. Wow.

I left you a link so you can see and read about these amazing products that will change the way you look at your bed.

    Good luck

  4. Find a duvet that is the same size as your comforter. You can pick a color to match your room.  It sometimes zips over or just fits over your present comforter. It is a nice cover for a comforter that is not in good shape or if you just want to change your color scheme.  Just unzip and wash!

  5. I love Duvets!

They are like a slip over a thinner comforter which either buttons or zips up. You can change duvets more often  and with duvets I dont use sheets because they are easily washable, unlike a bulky comforter. Hope that helps!

  6. A duvet is a like a pillowcase for a comforter, You put a comforter inside to change the look of a comforter, or to protect it. Also used for feather comforters so the feathers don't go all over the room. But you don't NEED one if you like your comforter the way it is. I personnally don't like all the loose feathers when you take it out of the duvet when washing!! It is very messy and alot of feathers come out. The feathers don't come out as much when it is not inside a duvet cover. One or two at a time and they are easy to get and throw away. Instead of a bunch when you take a duvet cover off.

  7. a duvet is simply a slip cover for a comforter, much in the way a pillowcase covers a pillow.  You purchase one simple comforter, can be white or down or whatever and you can have many duvets that go on it, change it out depending on the season, etc.  They usually button or zip at one end allowing you to change it out easily.
