I saved a plant from a flower shop for £1.50 but I am not sure what it is. unfortunately I don't have a picture I cans show and I'll just have to do my best at describing it.

It is in a very small pot, maybe 3" in diameter and is about 2" tall.

It has very thick waxy tough leaves. I accidentally broke one leave earlier, it kind of snapped off rather than tore to give you an idea about texture and it was very juicy inside.

There is no obvious stem, there are 3 main groups of leave, they grow in a circle with bigger older leaves at the back and newer leaves seeming to grow out of the middle of each group of leave. There is a kind of spiral pattern going on.

The newer leaves are tiny and green, as they grow they become wide and flat and taper to a point (the point is long on some of them, almost string-like). The older leaves at the back of each group have taken on a pinky/red colour . The ones at the very back appear to be quite red, with ones nearer the front (newer) only have red tips, and then the ones right at the front have no red at all. If I look between the oldest leaves at the back then they are green at the bottom (the hidden bit)

The leaves are very tightly packed, there is no space between them, they seem to grow out of one another in the centre. The different groups of leaves are so close together that I cant how they attach.

Do you know this plant?

  1. definatly a cactus. sounds alot like an aloe plant. they have a gooyey hollow inside and a toung outside which normally comes in green or a whitish green almost gray. also some are red

  2. Could be aloe or mother in laws tongue.

  3. Go to the library and borrow a book on plants, or look in flower shops for the same and then read the label.

  4. I does sound like a succulent. You can trying doing a search on line for different kinds of succulents, and there are a lot! I tried searching for one that grows in my back yard, maybe you will have better luck. There are a couple of web sites that have a ton of pictures you can use to compare to your plant. Good luck!

  5. Sounds like a "house leek" thats the common name, search that on the internet and I think you''ll find it

  6. sounds like some kind of succulent/cactus

  7. Sounds like a Sempervivum. They are round succulents with very fleshy leaves and are usually about 4 to 6in across when you first buy them although they may be smaller if very young. There are many species so it's difficult to say which one it is without a picture. They are quite hardy as long as you keep them dry in winter. They will usually have produce offsets quite easily.
