I was having dinner with the family of a close friend of mine. They are Vietnamese-American immigrants. Her mother offered me this fruit, which really looked like a sea urchin more than anything else. It was a dark purplish color and covered in slightly curling spines. I politely declined, but she insisted and cut one open for me. She made a shallow incision all the way around and removed the shell/skin to reveal a whole globe of this white gel-like substance. It had a pit in the middle. The flesh sort of tasted like a plum. It was delicious. My friend doesn't know what they're called in English, and I didn't catch what her family called them. What in the world did I eat, and where can I find another?
