  1. power-wash first, then paint; but use a high-quality paint.

also expect some flaking later on.

  2. You can, but you'll regret it.

White will show every little smudge and mar.

As to the type, there are apints marked

'Exterior Grade Deck Paint' formulated for your needs.

  3. I would NEVER paint anything that is outside. There are all kinds of new stains on the market. I stained 5 brand new wood decks white 5 years ago, and they only need some minor touch ups now,  All I did to touch up was spot stain.  No sanding, stripping, nothing.

  4. It sounds like your deck is weathered properly, but it also depends to some degree if anything has already been applied to it.  I would do the prep work as suggested, but if it has been stained in the past (with an oil-based stain), then I would use an oil-based product overtop.  This should help.

  5. Lot of answers here.  But no one has said one thing you need to know. You need a paint that is designed for floors and porches. Home Depot and Lowes both carry porch and floor paint. You can have it tinted to the color you want. Regular paint is not designed to be tough enough to walk on and will wear away faster and will look dirty sooner.

  6. With the proper prep work, you can paint the deck.  It may need to be repainted every year to keep the fresh look as paint will flake away.

  7. yes you can... Most of the deck stain/paint is base white or clear and then they add pigment to color it.. A rule of thumb on fence and deck stain/paint you get what you pay for... Stay away from Thompson's since it's around water 100%
