Canadian Public transit?

Should public transit in Canada be free? why or why not? please defend your position.

Running a transit system costs a lot of money.  Not only for the employees but also the vehicles, their fuel/electricity, maintenance, etc.  Someone has to pay for it.  If transit is free, the money will have to come from somewhere else.  That somewhere else is from government subsidies which means higher taxes.  Any Canadian will already tell you that taxes are high enough now...

yes because it could encourage less people to drive. therefore save the environment.

no ACTULY mostof what it costs to run the line is paid by supstudy  the fare is a very small part of income and shouldnt ppl that use it contribute a little more to use it then the guy oout in the country who never will but pays 4 it
