Question:

Canadian using Sonlight curriculum?

I am looking for our homeschool curriculum for next year.

If you are a Canadian using Sonlight, do you find the content very American. I am NOT anti-American and I am NOT opposed to teaching my kids American history and SS. I just want to know if I would have to supplement the program with Canadian history and SS.

If you have a mean comment about homeschooling, I don't want to know about it. Thanks.

  1. Sonlight isn't PRO-AMERICAN history, it is PRO-WORLD history.  It is the best history program that I have found that teaches kids about the entire world.  Yes, it does have a 2 year American history program for younger kids but you can skip that.  Their world history, eastern hemisphere, and 20th Century history programs are fabulous.  You will enjoy them as much (if not more than) your kids!

  2. The American history content in so many curriculums is one  reason we are electric homeschoolers.

Any boxed curriculum is American.  I don't believe there is a Canadian content one unless you are following your provincial curr.

I don't want to pay for a curriculum and then not use a lot of it because of the American content in math, social and history.

While my kids learn some American history, I feel it's more important for them to learn about their own country first and then the world.

  3. I am an American using Sonlight for the 5th year. We did not find Core 1 and 2 (Intro to World History year one and two) to be "American" based - it was actually fantastic and better world history than I was ever exposed to in school.

Sonlight 3rd/4th years are American History - straight up :)

We are on Year 5 now, and it is all Eastern Hemisphere history - all of us (adults too!) are learning a TON about countries like China, that we simply never had exposure to before.  I personally would use 1/2 and then substitute Canadian history for a year or so, then go on to 5 (Eastern Hemisphere).  We really love Sonlight! (and, by the way, we are NOT a religious family)

    Good luck!
