  1. Not sure if it works for everyone, but vitamin C seems to keep them away from me.  If i go too long without eating fruit, I always get them.

They are viral, so there is no "cure", only things that are supposed to make you feel more comfortable.

Peroxil Rinse is a mouthwash that makes your entire mouth feel tingly and helps for short periods of time.

Orabase works for some, but its paste-like and I end up getting it all over my mouth instead of just on the cankercore.

What i prefer is called Zilactin.  It stings at first, but makes a sort of bio-bandiad that coveres the sore.

  2. no one knows what causes them/how to cure them. many dentists think they are brought on by stress/diet/trauma.

there isn't really anything you can do to prevent them, some people are just more prone to getting the sores.

the pain usually lasts three or four days, but the sore may be present for up to two weeks.

try rinsing with salt water several times a day. one teaspoon salt to a tall glass of warm water. hold it in your mouth for a bit, swish and spit.

Zilactin (over the counter gel for this type of mouth sore) will numb the area for an hour or so - long enough for you to eat. It does burn like hellfire - so beware of that.

They aren't contagious from person to person, but it's not uncommon to have more than one at a time.

If you are in dire straits, call the dentist and ask if they can laser it off or swab you with Debactoral (an ointment that cauterizes the area)
