How do they turn the green cannabis plant into a brown lump of resin?

That is probably hashish.  They used to walk through the fields and brush up against the plants with some sort of cloth.  It would eventually become saturated with the sticky resin.  They also rubbed the plant between their hands.

The old method they used to roll the plant in their hands for ages until all the resin got stuck to their hands - then they would scrape it off and compact it.
