i am moving to canada in a year. so on my trip up north i am buying a used car in canada. can i get plates and ins on it while living in the usa? maybe use a canada. p.o.box as my address? i just do not want to register the car in the usa aka ohio pay all this money to get ohio plates if in a year i am moving

  1. yes you will have to get ohio plates first then transfer once you move to canada your car must be registered in the place where you live

It depends.  I think you might be able to but you will have to check the regulations of the province where you intend to live.  As a Canadian I was able to buy and register a vehicle in North Carolina so I don't see why it might not be possible for you to do the same.  However, there would be other issues with getting insurance in Canada if you will have the vehicle out of the country for  a year and also issues with driving a Canadian registered vehicle in Ohio for a year.  You need to check those things carefully, as you may get in big difficulty if you have an accident.

  3. I don't think so.  But the laws about that vary from province to province so you should contact a registry agent in the province you are moving to and ask.  Importing cars can be problematic too.
