Question:

Cat Help!? He's peeing everywhere!?

I have a male cat, a year and a half old, an up until a month or so ago, was completely litter box trained. There are 4 other cats in the house (another grown male, grown female, two female kittens). The cat has begun to pee everywhere. In boxes, corners, now...on our counter top! I don't want to get rid of him, but I cannot have this!

He does seem to get stressed out easy, is it just a nervous bladder? He also considers himself the "alpha" male, so is he spraying? But this is pools of what I am sure is urine, but I am no cat expert. Please help!

  1. is he neutered? if not, this may help. sometimes it does, sometimes it does not.

i have a female cat that did this once, she was also pooping all over the place too- it turns out she had a uti. so he may have to go to the vet regardless. good luck!

  2. this type of bathroom behavior is indicative of stress, most often overcrowding.  You need to get rid of some of the other cats.  3 others is obviously too many for him.  It is unfair of you to keep adding cats when it clearly upsets the first ones you have.  I would place the 2 new kittens elsewhere---your boy will stop doing this and be MUCH happier.  Trust me, this problem will not stop any other way. Well, actually I did get it to stop once, but then the cat got so stressed that he began pulling out his own fur.  After I got rid of the other cat, he was fine

  3. if he feels like he is the "alpha makle" then he is probably marking his territory now that there are 2 females to impress and another cat to compete with. wouldn't you do the same. keep him in an enclosed environment, a cage with a little box, or a room where the other cats won't see him. then he will behave and get used to them being around and not needing to pee everywhere else. if he does continue to pee like this, take him to the vet. maybe he has an overactive bladder, but he should be in the litter box everytime regardless, so i don't know why he is acting like this other than marking his territory and feeling like he needs attention. like little kids. they break things. make sure you spend time with it. and show it love. there are intruders around (so he thinks) good luck to you

  4. Have you taken him to the vet to rule out a urinary tract infection?

Has anything changed that could be stressing him? Have you tried adding additional litter boxes? He may be overwhelmed by the newcomers. There may be a change in heirarchy occurring. When cats spray, they emit strong-smelling urine.

If a UTI has been ruled out, then you need to address stress. Add additional litter boxes; try Feliway spray and even flower essences (these were helpful when my cat was spraying due to stress). You can email me for more info.

I hope the problem is resolved in the best interests of you and the cats!
