Cat food attracts flies!!?

I have an outdoor cat, and his dry food attracts so many flies in my backyard. How do I get rid of them and prevent more from coming back? I know it's somewhat ineviteable, but I want to minimize the number of them because I want to take my baby outside to enjoy the beautiful Southern California weather. No silly answers please.

  1. Just feed him a couple of times a day, only what he is going to eat right then.Don't worry about him being hungry between feedings because I promise, he will catch a bird if needed.

I know because I have a couple of outsiders myself and this is the same routine that  I go through. What's his name?

  2. Yeah, change the way you do things!

The flies won't go away if there is a food source.  You're lucky you don't have a problem with raccoons at night!

  3. I trained my outdoor cat by calling her when it was feeding time.  She'd come and eat, then I'd put the food away.

You could try fly paper, but if the food is left out, you're gonna get flies.

  4. If you leave the food out at night, it will also attract roaches.  I feed my 2 outside cats twice a day.  I only leave their food out for about 30 minutes, then put it away.  They are almost 2 years old and healthy, so I think this is fine.  Your cat will get used to eating while the food is out.  Best to feed at the same times each day.
