Innovations are applications of scientific principles and discoveries.

There are 5 types of innovations:

1-- The light invention like the can opener,  the remote control.

2-- The improvement like the VCR is the improvement on the Ampex tape recorder, or the blu-ray disk is an improvement on the CD-ROM.

3-- The combination like the a dish washer, it puts together the electric pump, a timer, and various mechanisms.

4-- The creation like the helicopter, the television, the telephone.

5-- The fundamental innovation like electric motor, the airplane, the internal combustion engine, electronics, and in the future nanotechnologies.

Of course, take an innovation, it will not fit just one category but an innovation may include all 5 categories.
