Central Air Unit?

Doesn't seem to be putting out as much cold air as last year. It is a 10 year old Trane unit. Also, the air inside the house feels clammy. How do I speed uo the blower motor into the house? Any answers would be helpful. Thanks.

  1. The compressor is not running or the evaporator coil is frozen.

Try running the fan "on"and the heat /cool "off" for 30 minutes. This will defrost it if she's froze up and will get you some cooling when it is put back to normal operation ,till it freezes up again.Try that and call a serviceman if your compressor on the outside is not running, after checking the breaker.Don't mistake the fan for the compressor on the outside unit.

  2. Oil the motors

    clean the a-coil and condenser

    change the air filters

check the low side pressure should be 68 PSI

  3. There's no speeding up the blower motor, short of replacing it. Check your filters, restricting air flow and the overflow pipe and/or pan ( if you have one), might be clogged and not removing the humidity. It may also be frozen up, if so turn it off completely for a few hours and give it a rest!

I just had an 18 year old 10 seer/2 ton unit replaced with a 14 seer/3 1/2 ton Amana unit...saving bigtime on electricity and it does a great job, not running constantly like the old one.  Got a tax credit on my Fed. Income Tax, too...$300.  Should about pay for itself in a few years.

  4. You can't speed up the blower, try replacing the filter.

  5. We also have a 10yearold unit and it works very hard to do its job.  I suspect 10 years is about the lifespan of a CA unit.  Besides, the new condensers they are making are far superior to those of 10 years ago.

It is usual for the AC blower to be hooked up to the fan's highest speed, and that's a setting that occurs somewhere in that large metal thing in the basement (here's hoping a tecchie will be along soon!).  If the air inside feels clammy, check the condensation pipe that runs from your fan area to a hole in the floor and see if it's blocked.

And of course keep your filter changed.
