Question:

Central air-- is it working?

When I came home today the house was over 90 degrees. The outside fan was not running, which it turns out was because the fuse was flipped. So, I got the outside fan running and the furnace is running, but the pipe where the freon goes in doesn't feel very cold now (after about an hour of the outside fan running again) and the air coming out of the registers doesn't feel cold. Any suggestions?

  1. The first thing to check is the air filter - it probably needs to be replaced.

  2. A fuse would not blow if it was just a filter.  You need a tech.

  3. The fan is running at the outdoor unit but the compressor must not be.

So you have got power to the outdoor unit and the control is telling it to run.

Could be some thing low cost to repair like a faulty electrical connection or a capacitor for the compressor so you might need a tech to diagnose.

  4. if the breaker to the condenser tripped your drawing to many amps outside down here in TEXAS I'm cleaning condenser coils and replacing capacitors daily so clean your condenser coil you might save your self a service call

  5. We just had AC issues. The service man brought a themometer and stuck it into the vinyl duct work that comes out of the furnace.  He checked the temp of the air it was blowing when it was on. It wasn't as cool as it should have been so they recharged it(added freeon) and it works great now!

Checking your filter is good....should be replaced once a year for your furnace to run more effeciently anyway.  Then try sticking just a regular meat thermometer into that vinyl spot and see what it reads.  I think ours was in the 70's before recharging and then 45 afterwards.

Cost us $100. Well worth it!!
