Question:

Chain stretching: Is this normal?

I recently bought a tool that will compare the distance of a segment of the chain with a .75% stretch and a 1% stretch on the other side. My first measurement gave a "good chain" reading but out of curiosity I also measured other segments and discovered that every now and again I got a segment that was over-stretched. How come? If this is normal then how many measurements must one take to make sure of getting the right answer and whats the right conclusion to a bad reading every 5 or 6 good ones?

  1. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link! ( sound familiar). A chain should always be checked for stretch at several points. The correct conclusion here would be to replace the chain. A " ganked " chain will change you from a cyclist to a walker or even a walker with bruises pretty quick. My suggestion is to avoid the KMC chains and use either sram, shimano

  2. You chain may not stretch evenly.  If you have bad spots, then they are going to wear your cassette (rear gears) and chainrings (front gears) unevenly, not to mention your derailleur wheels.

If you have bad spots, get a new chain.  You don't have to buy the highest priced chain, but make sure it matches your setup.  It will save you money down the road.

  3. Chain stretch is kind of a misnomer.  The chain does get longer, but it isn't because the links get longer!  What really happens is the pins and the sleeves wear.  As they wear, play gets introduced into the chain and it "stretches."

Chain stretch doesn't happen because the chain is under tension.  It occurs because dirt penetrates the inner realm of the chain and wears the pins and sleeves.  The fact some parts of your chain are OK and other parts are worn, simply indicates some parts of your chain have stayed cleaner than other parts.

If your tool indicates you have worn links, it is time to replace it.  If you continue to ride with the chain it will cause wear on the chainrings and cassette forcing you to replace them, as well.

    Hope this helps.

  4. avoid Fred marks! keep your drivetrain clean! it will also last longer!
