Certainly as suggested, SPRAY over. You should be able to get an answer from a vendor who sells the spray cans as to the compatibility of the new paint, over whatever substance currently coats/seals the furniture.

You'd notice almost immediately any negative reactions between the two formulations, and perhaps should test first on an inconspicuous area.
