alright guys i need a little math refresher that school has started.

how can i change these formulas into the y=mx+b formula:

1. y+x=5.

2.3x+4y+8=o

3.5x+4y=15

4.3x=5y+8

5.16=2y+4x

guys i don't want just want the answer i want a good explannation of the methods used to chnage these into y=mx+b. i have an upcoming quiz and i'm lost cuz my new school teaches this in a diffrent way and now i'm confused!!!!!!!1

  1. 1. y = -x +5

    2. y = -3/4x - 2

    3. y = -5/4x + 15

    4. y = 3/5x + 8/5

    5. y = -2x + 8

  2. 1. y+x=5.

    y = -x + 5

    2.3x+4y+8=o

    4y = -3x - 8

    y = -3x/4 - 2

    3.5x+4y=15

    4y = - 5x + 15

    y = -5x/4 + 15/4

    4.3x=5y+8

    5y = 3x - 8

    y = 3x/5 - 8/5

    5.16=2y+4x

    2y = -4x + 16

    y = -2x + 8

  3. for the first 1 u subtract x and put it on the other side so it would be

    y=-x+5

    for number 2 u subtract 3x and 8 so it would be 4y=-3x-8 after u divide 4 to 3 and 8 so ull final anwser would be y=-3/4x-2

    hope u understand w/ these because i dont want 2 do the rest

  4. you want to keep y on the left side and x and the constant on the right side. dont forget that in the first one the slope is 1 (which is the coefficient in front of the x, but you dont write it bc 1*x = x)

    the first one would be

    Y = -x + 5, where m= --1, and b = 5

    a harder one, lets say, 4

    would be

    5y = 3x -8

    y = (3/5)x - (8/5), so m = 3/5 and b = -8/5

    get it? if not email me... paul.distasio@yahoo.com

    I'm a math major, but it is just to hard to type it all out in a way for you to understand!!  check out this website, it has alot of lessons and it explains and shows examples-  hope it helps!

    Miss Mary

  6. let's use number 1 as an example. what you do is pretend x is a regular number, and you're isolating y. and now since you're trying to isolate y, you move x over to the side with 5. that would turn out to y=-x+5. 5 would be the b

    let's try another number 2 as an example. for number 2, you have to isolate y again.

    so you move everything to the other side, which would turn out to be 4y=-3x-8.

    However, there's a number in front of y. now since it's 4 times y. you have to divide instead.

    so you divide the other side by 4. which would turn out to be y=-3/4x-2

    well that's how it's done. hope it helped. try doing the rest. it's basically like what i explained.
