Changing laws for important social issues?

as a class debate i have to find out why the australian government should NOT change its laws quickly and easily based on important social issues. i have searched the net and not found anything so i was wondering if anyone had any points on the subject. i am open to any information =)

It has everything to do with how the court systems work.  I'm not sure how the Australian courts work, but most courts work on a system based on "precedence" (n. precedents).  Any ruling that runs against precedents is called "judicial activism" and is supposed to be very rare and only used very sparingly.  Otherwise, a single judge could change the direction of an entire nation quickly and easily, and societies just can't adapt that quickly.  It usually takes a generation for a society to take a major leap in social advancement.
