Question:

Changing of the guard?

This year in the Cup series it appears that the new crop of drivers are becomming the top dogs. Busch, Edwards, Kahne vs Gordon, Stewart, Kenseth. The first three guys i named all came into the sport 3-4 years ago and they have won the most races this year while the later guys are putting up the numbers we use to. Are we seeing the "changing of the guard" or will one of the seasoned vets make a surge during the second half of the season.

  1. Lock and Load as Truex Jr will be the raging inferno this 2nd half. Go Martin Truex Jr and the Bass Pro team!!!

  2. Don't ever forget the story about the tortoise and the hare.  Until one of these newer drivers wins a championship there IS no changing of the guard.  I'm not saying that one of them might not win it this year, but Matt, Jeff, Tony and Jimmie (you forget to mention the back to back champ) will be in the mix for this year's championship, guaranteed.  Don't confuse early season dominance with who might have the best chance to win it all, the veterans have been there and done that.  They all know what it takes to win championships and are not going to be intimidated by the younger drivers that are winning the majority of the races right now.  They know how to handle the pressure and how to keep focus on what is most important, that being those last 10 races.  We have seen many times before that you just have to peak at the end of the season and avoid major problems in the chase races.

    3 STR8 N 08!!!

  3. ah grasshopper.....I think one seasoned veteran is getting ready to start his streak!!  Yeppers, Smoke is ready to roll!!

  4. Don't ever count Kenseth out. Remember a few years ago he was all the way back in 20th something in points after 13 races & STILL made the chase. I wouldn't count him out until the checkard falls at Richmond this fall.

And Smoke seems distracted. But I wouldn't count him out either. I'm not a fan but he is dedicated & driven. So I wouldn't bet against him.

Gordon, well, let's just say that I won't shed any tears if he misses the chase. Sorry Gordon fans.

  5. I think the seasoned vets are going to start making their surge sometime this month.

  6. I believe that it is really a consequence of the cyclical nature of NASCAR(i.e. some teams do great one year, then don't the next year,etc.).A good example of this would be the fact that Roush racing dominated in 2005,then had a pretty rough season the next year;Hendrick is having a similar scenario this year, although I still wouldn't say they are "struggling" because they are only struggling compared to "their standards".Other than that, you have to look at the amount of talent you mentioned in the question.Kyle Busch is one of the most talented drivers out there,Carl Edwards is no joke, and Kasey Kahne is no longer referred to as "Krash Kahne". However,I do feel that this trend will not continue the entire season; you will see veterans like Jimmie Johnson,Tony Stewart,Jeff Gordon, and Matt Kenseth make a surge at the end of the year(maybe not Matt, though,bc he is struggling without Robbie Reiser)and win some races!!

  7. One think you learn quickly is NEVER count the veterans out.  You know Tony Stewart can come back and win every week and climb the fence.  Yes the younger guys are doing great as well they should but the Old guys are not really that old and will be back.
