Hi, i LOVE rugby. im 14 and play for my local club and school. I want to go as far as i can with rugby. Ive been playing rugby for six years. i started out playing as a prop but due to my height i have changed to lock. Once again im thinking of changing positions to no .8. this is due to the fact that i am moving to a bigger and better club who dont have a good no. 8. Also i like playing there..

Does anyone have any training advice or just general feedback to somone who loves rugby and wants to hopefully play rugby professionally?

(By the way im 6ft 2 and 11st 8 pounds of a decent build)

  1. jesus my son, 6ft2 and 11 stones at 14.. lol.. well try eight and see how it goes.. by the way if you start hittin the gym at this age you wont have a chance at a career because you will destroy your body.. let your body grow for another 2 years then worry about getting size.. alot can happen in that time so dont worry about it now.. you have to finish growing first.. and you want training advice.. well here it is. plyometrics... work on your footwork and ball handling skills....

  2. As you are no doubt aware a loose forward position and key role to play with ball distribution.

Practice stepping off both sides to strengthen thighs, run few strides step left run few strides step right and so on.

    Practice packing down low,spear in.down low,spear in

Build upper body strength with sit ups, with knees at chest.

Protect ears with guards while young.

Continually work on mobility around rucks and mauls.

    speed to breakdown.

You are a good size for age work on speed and strength

  3. The first thing you will have to do is work on your triceps.  The 8-mans most powerful weapon is the strength of his arms and legs.  Hit the gym and work on your entire body but mainly focus on your triceps and legs.

To be an 8-man you need agility but you need to be able to take a hit.  Anyone can play 8, but if you can't take a hit, stiff arm and run your way through flankers then whats the point?

If you KNOW you can play 8, then thats all you need, just out show the other 8.  Start there but don't worry about big leagues yet.

Once you hit high school is when you should look into training camps for (in my case) the provincial team.  From there on practice and get stronger and smarter

  4. How good are you playing as a number 8?

This position is basically the heart of the team, so the only one capable to answer this question is you my friend.

However if you are a smart player and if you can pass the ball…
