I'm a 22 year old recent college grad looking to move to North Carolina from Pennsylvania sometime after the first of the year. I've narrowed it down to Charlotte and Raleigh, and was hoping to get some insider information from people who have lived there -- anything you can share would help!

  1. i would recommend asheville as well. i moved to asheville from charlotte about 3 months ago...and i'm so glad i did. i have also visited raleigh many times.

charlotte is definitely better than raleigh though if you have your mind set on moving to one of those two places.

i'm not sure what information you are looking for about each place...what's important to you. you can im me if you want and ask any questions and i'll give you my opinion.

i can give you a million reasons why  you should consider asheville though.

good luck in making the best choice! :)

  2. I would suggest visiting both cities although my favorite is Charlotte.

In the end if you choose Charlotte I think you'll be happy but Raleigh may be a perfect fit for you so give both a try and think seriously before making a final conclusion.  Welcome to NC.  I live in the Triad!!

  3. Neither!!  Both are really a huge traffic mess and have pretty high crime rates (especially Raleigh near the Durham area).   I would highly recommend either Asheville or Winston-Salem.  Maybe even Wilmington.

If you want a smaller town look at Boone!  Beautiful small college town.

  4. I recommend Raleigh.

Steve is right that Durham has high crime, but wrong regarding Raleigh - it does not.

Raleigh has done great city planning.  Traffic not bad at all.

IMO, the most important thing for a 22 year old college grad is social life.  Both towns are great, but Raleigh is a center of high-tech and telecomm and there are LOTS of young people/new grads in that area.  Couple that with all the universities and you have a really good place to meet other people your age.

But both cities are great.  I lived in Raleigh for 8 years and I've visited Charlotte a lot.

You won't go wrong with Raleigh.  (The job market is very strong for someone fresh out of school as well.)

  5. i live in Raleigh, and Id suggest Charlotte..there are more jobs, more activities, more things to do...living in Raleigh is boring..all i ever hear is how good it is to live in Raleigh b/c we are "two hours from the beach, two hours from the mountains" but there is nothing here..no water parks, no beaches..no zoo..everything is in a differnt part of the state...if you like pro football and basketball the teams are located in Charlotte also...being 22 i'd go there..im older than you and have a home, otherwise i'd probably relocate to Charlotte myself
