My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Mexico this spring. I've checked airline tickets and from san francisco they are only 100 bucks to places like cancun. DOes anyone have experiences in places in mexico where it was inexpensive to stay but had a good experience overall?

  1. Puerto Vallarta is inexpensive sometimes ....other times it is cheaper to fly to cancun from the west coast (weird!)

Last summer my husband and I flew into Cancun but since it wasn't our style we headed to a beachfront hut on the beach in Tulum. We stayed at http://www.zamas.com/ If you need more entertainment the laying around on beach chairs you can take a taxi to natural water park Xel-Ha(for a splurge day, its expensive) ,or a  snorkling tour, zip line tours, ruins and more.

Another idea if you fly into Cancun would be to take a bus from the airport to Playa del Carmen. (still touristy, with shopping, beach bars, etc, but sometimes less expensive, and a little calmer vibe)

We stayed at http://www.posada-mariposa.com/ nothing fancy but  clean and just  a 5-10 minute walk to Mamitas beach club and a quieter side of the busy 5th Ave.

Have fun, we had a great time!

  2. Tulum is about an hour south of Cancun, but the prices are much cheaper.  Take a look at the prices and reviews at the tripadvisor site below.

  3. cabo is pretty nice but so is cancun. cancun is more of a busier place than cabo. cabo is a bit more low key (cheaper too)

  4. playa del carmen  has lots to offer and some cheap- clean -and safe places to stay

  5. I booked through expedia.  We stayed at the Akumal Beach Resort in Akumal Mexico, 45 minutes south of Cancun.  It was excellent, it was beautiful and ALL INCLUSIVE!  We paid $2000 for 2 people for 7 days.  I would definately recommend it.
