Cheapest Driveway?

Question

I might be bidding on a house that lacks a driveway. What is the cheapest way to go? I assumed an asphalt driveway would be cheapest, but I'm open to suggestions, tips, advice, etc.

dirt,gravel drive way depending on the location.

concrete is not really that bad either,the money is in the workers labor,not the product.

try two straight lines of cement with grass in the middle. if kept groomed it looks great with a craftsman house!

kind of like this picture but you really only need two long pieces so that the tires can fit .

I used to used black-top alot........now it's all concrete.....I just think it's it's a better job all the way around.  As you get more money you(that is if you plan ahead for it) can over lay a brick or tile pattern.....or you can pour some recesses in it now and brick later..........you can expose the aggregate(rocks) by washing.......pea gravel or bigger.......up to you. Not that hard to do........you and a couple of friends could do it on a sat. Have fun...........Oh.......you could also pour it by yourself in 4 or more sections ....depending what size it is.....nite

no matter what you are going to use for the driveway, you have to first clear the ground by 4 inches, prepare it as needed  by shoring up the low spots, deal with drainage, then you can consider material.  Cheapest is gravel. Next, stone. after that you can try asphalt but I  doubt the contractor will deal with you. and finally, cement.  Done right it isnt an easy undertaking.  Nice  though is if you start with gravel or stone you can easily graduate to cement.

mmmmm,interesting.

You have some options,allot depends on the outcome your wishing to achieve.If your in a rural setting recycled  asphalt is by far the cheapest.

1) If your considering hot asphalt simply get a bid from your local supplier.

NOTE: Do not let them sell you 4" before compaction.You want 4" compacted,any less and problems will haunt you.As a side note I have done many custom asphalt drives that doing a 12" curb all the way down on each side holds the asphalt in place.

2) rural setting.I would say recycled asphalt is the way to go.I have done so many with my bobcat service it would scare you.

3) Concrete,by far the most expensive but durable.

4) Don't let allot of people scare you.If you chose the recycled route just have it delivered and grade.I will say grading at 70 or above gives a better job.

I am in the bobcat service,concrete wall/flatwork bizz for 25+ with no major problems.

I see my attorney once a month for many reasons,no problems.

If the driveway is flat or has only a moderate slope, Crusher Run gravel is a good bet.  It's inexpensive, looks decent, and it stays in place.

No offense, but MIGHT be bidding on???

   I don't see any real issue until you win the bid, or the bid can be less due to something as insignificant as a driveway.

   Answer 1 offers what is likely the least expensive "Finished" driveway on the planet, but how it matters is up to you.

   Answer 2 offers a valid notion in drainage, which may equate to water tables, grade, and soil stability, but makes very little difference in planning something "CHEAP"

  To assume this Might be house has no driveway, suggests it was never intended to, or has no garage, or carport, OR that the former owners didn't care.

   Without any suggestion about the cost or value of a driveway in the over all bid or any assumed added value to a house you MIGHT win, I think I'd wait until the Might be, becomes a reality. If at that point it still matters, then it may be still your choice, or coded, or dictated, or comparative to others in the location.

Cement...don't fool with asphalt. You may think you are getting it cheaper... but if you don't use cement- you will be sorry.

Get cement and you will not have to pay twice.

stone is cheapest by all means put 12 inches of 4 inch stones and put 3 inches of a good compacting stone and it will give you a good base in a few years you can have it paved when you get the money
