It's called saving for retirement. You'll understand better when you realize that your parents wont be able to work for the rest of their lives. They need to be putting away money now, to feed themselves later. What's your plan for feeding yourself later in life. Mom and Dad won't be doing that for you forever you know.

They spend it on other things, just not food. They probably have better cars and other stuff, because they now have saved money to go to other things and live more luxurious-like.

I don't know how you understood everything they did was cheap when they specificaly talked about grocery shopping. Besides it's nobodys business including yours WHAT they do with their money..no one can accurately say where it goes besides them. All we can do is take a wild guess.
