Question:

Cheapest way to travel by train?

Im going from Derby to Gillingham Dorset, and a saver return with a yp railcard is around 47 pounds. I want to know if anyone knows a cheaper way to go (there are no advance tickets available for the journey- i checked) but sometimes it is cheaper to get two saver returns and break the journey at a certain point. Anyone know any tips?

  1. Lots of hints and tips here: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/...

Try www.thetrainline.com and try the individual train operating company's (TOC's) webistes - they can be different.

    Try booking early, where possible.

In London and the South of England, try www.megatrain.com

Always try to be flexible and travel off-peak.

Split one long journey into little, smaller ones.

  2. No, two singles aren't cheaper - the cheapest for a month ahead quoted on www.thetrainline.com is £41.25. YOu cannot beat your saver return of £47 for thge full journey. However, check http://www.eastmidlandstrains.co.uk/EMTr... to see if East Midlands Trains have any offers from Derby to London and http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/SWTrain... for southwest's offers from London to Gillingham - these will depend on the date and timeof travel which you don't give.
