18. Any discussion of polarity and polar bonds is likely to include the terms partial negative (delta - ) and partial positive (delta +). Why?

a)Polarity is caused by the presence of ionic bonds that are not quite completely ionic, therefore the charges are not quite full ion charges.

b)Polarity is really due to the gain and loss of electrons; therefore, the partial charges are very close to being complete charges

c)Polarity is due to the uneven sharing of electrons; the atoms involved do not completely gain or lose electrons which produces a partial charge.

d)Polarity is a theoretical concept and the idea of partial charges is used to separate the theoretical from the proven.

  1. Atoms are not compressed into a perfect shape. They are dynamic with the electrons. London forces help to explain this.

    a) a bond is ionic or it is not ionic - NO

    b) Polarity can occur this way, but polarity in a neutral molecule is really due to unpaired electrons are dipole moments. - NO

    c) YES because this is the definition of London forces

    d) Polar geometries that molecules go into do exist. Fritz London accounted for the weak attraction between two molecules using London forces - NO

Hope I was able to contribute just a little bit
