The density of water at 4 °C is 1.00 g /mL.

Why are you unlikely to obtain that same value from your calculation of water’s density?

  1. Water is an unusual compound; it has a max density (1.00 g/mL) at a unique temp (4*C). It is lower both above and below 4*C...so if your measurement is carried out at any other temp, your result will be low.


  2. There is error associated with measuring devices(just look on a graduated cylinder, it states this). Example:You may think you have 100 mL, but you really may have 98.4 or 100.2 mL.

    The water will not always stay at constant temperature of 4 degrees C--your body heat or breath may raise it to 5.0, etc.

    If you didn't clean off your balance, clean out your measuring device, or tare the balance, you will have greater error.
