Qualitative analysis is concerned with WHAT is present, regardless of the amount. Example: In a urine pregnancy test, a positive test is obtained if a certain hormone (human chorionic gonadotropin) is present (the amount doesn't matter).

In quantitative analysis, one is concerned with HOW MUCH of a specific substance is present. Example: Stainless steel contains at least 10% Cr; there are very accurate methods to determine exactly how much Cr is present in the steel.
