Chihuahua or Pomeranian?

Question

I've been looking into getting a puppy for the past three years. I've narrowed it down to a chihuahua or pomeranian. I need a small dog who can travel with me (musician, touring). I just want companionship. I'm leaning towards a pom because they're more spunky , but there's that other part of me that just needs a quiet little chihuahua. I know personality varies from dog to dog, but I'm trying to just speak on general temperment. What are your thoughts?

honestly i would get a Pomeranian only because chihuahua's are a sassy dog and they don't like strangers cause i have 2 pure breds and they don't like anyone i have a male and i have a female my male is 8 months old and only weighs 3.8lbs and my female is a yr and she weighs 6lbs but they aren't friendly at all and the funny part is i took them around people when they was like 7 weeks old and they just don't like anyone i guess  they all have different temperment really. then again some chihuahua's are nice and some are sassy as h**l. i always love chihuahua's and i finally got 2 of them and i plan on getting at least 2 more.

it depends if your getting a male or female and the color of the puppy

How much time will you be apart from your dog?  How much time and money will you have to spend grooming? If you won't have much time to spend with a dog, then get a cat or a guinea pig. Or consider getting 2 dogs. Dogs are pack animals and need to be around others. A Pom will need to be brushed and combed daily to keep out the mats. You will need to keep the eyes free of fur so they won't get runny. A short hair Chi needs almost no grooming. Keep them clean and trim their nails and your done. I've never had a Pom, but I have 4 Chis and I think they are perfect for me. Loving little couch potatos. But they can be spunky, too. Mine will "slap" me with a paw if they need something, like attention or petting

Who told you Chi's were quiet?  No so.

The Poms are a little sturdier for the traveling.

Although temperament and socialization of the individual dog is most important.  Most Poms tend to be more outgoing than most Chi's

Note:  it is essential that both breeds be socialized properly or can get possessive of their owners and wary of strangers.

i have a chihuhua and its the bomb it only likes me but its so attached that i wouldnt like it any other way its very defensive toword you and is easy to entertain and sleeps alot and for a person that travels alot there designed for that so it would be a hands down decision

I was a touring musician for a few years myself... still managed to lug around my 265 pound Mastiff with us.. :) (RIP Tic)

Personally, I prefer BIG dogs, but I would go with the Pom. Chihuahuas seem to be a little more aggressive in my experience. Plus... I just find them cuter. Haha. That's just my opinion though.

Quiet little chihuahua? HA! Chihuahuas are loud. Anyway, The choice for a dog is up to you. You have to realize people on the internet arent going to help you. They dont know you. Read up on them on the AKC website, compare them with your lifestyle, and make your own decision on your own.

A Pomeranian is basically a Chihuahua in a fur coat.  All things being equal, Poms tend to have nicer personalities, and I don't know where you got the idea that Chihuahuas are quiet.

Between the two, go with the Pomeranian.  Or consider a Cavalier King Charles, if you can avoid getting one of the bug-eyed ones.

Pomeranian! My lil pom is a sweetie, yes they're spunky and definetly have a mind of their own.

But poms are a dime a dozen (which means their temperaments are unstable with each pomeranian, every pom is different)

If you go to a breeder to get one, choose the pup from the litter that walks up to you 2nd or 3rd, the first that comes is the dominant one (stubbornness) and the last is the most submissive one (shy, skiterish, submissive peeing)

The pom is going to demand a lot of attention, just the upkeep....think of all that hair that has to be brushed.

The chihuahua, a short hair one, would also be good if you are around people who might be alergic, there suppost not to cause alergic reactions.

chi cause they are like you said more quiet but can also have spunk to them. they typically get attached to one or two people and just give u nothing but love.
