Choosing an Ethernet Card?

Im just wondering before i go buy anything, I need a network card and ive seen there is a 10/100Mbps and 10/1000Mbps, by having the 10/1000Mbps will you internet be running faster ?

  1. Your internet browsing won't be any faster as your bandwidth will be bottlenecked by your broadband modem.  Typically, ISPs such as Comcast, AT$T, etc. will provide 6mbps connections...compare that to the 100 or 1000 mbps your network card will be running and you'll see it really doesn't make much difference which way you go.

    If you are going to be transferring large amounts of data on your home network, between computers, then it might make sense to to standardize your network for gigabit (1000mbps).  You'd have to insure your router and any switches were also rated for 10/1000 along with using cat 5e (or greater) cable.


  2. No gigabit cards are only really used on very large networks
