  1. well, the unhelpful answer is Churchill Downs Incorporated.  It's not a person anymore.  Originally John and Henry Churchill owned the land... they leased it to Clark who made the racetrack... he was head of the Louisville Jockey Club... when you see "JC" on the Churchill Downs grandstand (on the back of it... facing the paddock) it stands for Jockey Club.  Later it was sold to Applegate, then later someone named Winn who registered it as a corporation.  So today it's like any other corporation... the stockholders own it, they elect directors, and directors elect the officers who run it.  So it's a big mass of people so it's hard to really say who owns it anymore.  Churchill Downs Inc also owns other racetracks including Calder Racecourse in Florida and the Fairgrounds in New Orleans.  Here's a link to the website to read more about Churchill Downs Inc: http://www.churchilldownsincorporated.co...
