Cinema Cameras?

Question

What type of cameras do directors, the ones in hollywood, use. And what is a good website to look at really good cameras. Also, in your opinion, with these qualifications, what do you believe is the best camera, that you can get at any best buy ar something:

1) High resolution, and good picture quality.

2) Is adaptable to your TV

3) The sound quality is perfect, no muffly sounds, and echoes when you try and talk, or move with it.

4) Comes with a tripod, and carry case.

Hollywood directors shoot with long metal rods that are attached to tiny black boxes that are then attached to tiny, shiny, silver metallic boxes. Quite coincidentally, these are similar to the Beachtek DXA-2s, Canon HV20, and the Rode NTG-2 that I and some other people happen to use. Weird, no? But in all seriousness, Hollywood directors actually just sit in chairs. The camera opertators that do shoot use really large boxes with Mickey Mouse ears attached that cost about as much as a house. Unfortunately these boxes don't record sound so they have to use this plexiglass clapper thing to synch up the picture with the sound that's recorded separately. And when the sound quality isn't perfect and they get muffly sounds and echoes, then they usually kidnap the actors and force them to repeat every line they said in a studio so that they can replace the sound. Hollywood uses 35, 65 and 70 mm film motion picture cameras. the cameras sometimes use proprietary systems and are  only available as lease rentals from the manufacturer.

If you evaluate a camcorder on the basis of whether it comes with a free tripod then you will not get your moneys worth.

Of course once you're away from film and mega-budgets to really down to digital and HD. You really need to balance your budget against what you want to do. I currently use JVC ProHD cameras which give you the best of a few worlds...sharp SD DV and film-like HDV. They are also about the best low end cameras I've ever used and deliver the maximum bag for buck in their class.

Of course if you're starting down the ladder a bit then go with at least something like the Canon XL1s or XL2 or Sony PD-170 etc. You can normally get a package deal on the camera, bag, tripod and good shotgun mike etc.
