I work as a bartender and I am looking to buy a new home. The problem is that my employer is not claiming my cash tips for me. They are claiming my Credit card tips but my cash tips are about $500.00 a week or more! I need these tips on the books so I can purchase the house that my family wants. Can I get an accountant to file my tips weekly/monthly or do I have to wait till the end of the year?

  1. you should claim the tips on your tax return.  there is a place on the IRS form for this purpose.  your employer is supposed to add the tips to your statement at a rate of 20 percent of your intake.  do your credit card tips amount to 20 percent?

  2. I'm SURE the Revenue Dept. will be REALLY interested in hearing about your cash tips .. so interested that I bet they send some-one around  to 'have a chat' with everyone else working at  the bar :-)

  3. Bartenders do not generally make enough money to purchase a house.
